1. ABOUT THE DATASET ------------ Title: Modified Weight Bias Internalization Scale dataset Creator(s): Paul Jenkins (https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1673-2903), Lacin Baysen Organisation(s): University of Reading Rights-holder(s): University of Reading, Lacin Baysen Publication Year: 2025 Description: This repository contains data collected as part of an MSc Project in the Academic Year 2022/23. 205 participants are included who completed an online study, all of whom were undergraduate or postgraduate university students. Measures of disordered eating, weight bias internalisation, eating-disorder quality of life, health-related quality of life, depression symptoms, and anxiety symptoms were included. The study looked at the relationship between disordered eating, quality of life, and weight bias internalisation. In addition to forming part of an MSc thesis, the data have subsequently been used as part of a further study to look at the psychometric properties of the WBIS-M in a student sample. PROJECT AND FUNDING INFORMATION ------------ Title: Psychometric validation of the Modified Weight Bias Internalization Scale Dates: September 2022 to September 2023 Funding organisation: This dataset was not created in the course of a funded project. Grant no.: NA 4. CONTENTS ------------ File listing The repository includes one Excel dataset, with two Sheets. Sheet 'WBIS-M Dataset' contains the raw data for the study. Sheet 'Codes' provides string equivalents to the numerical items for gender and ethnicity and clarification of the Item numbers for the column labels. The measures used are: 1. Modified Weight Bias Internalisation Scale (Pearl & Puhl, 2014, Body Image, 11(1), 89-92) 2. Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26; Garner et al., 1982, Psychol Med, 12(4), 871–878) 3. EDQOL (Engel et al., 2006, Int J Eat Disord, 39(1), 62-71) 4. EDE-Q7 (Grilo et al., 2015, Int J Eat Disord, 48(3), 284-9) and the behavioural items from the EDE-Q v6 (Fairburn, 2008, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Eating Disorders). 5. WHOQOL-Bref UK version (WHO; see https://www.who.int/tools/whoqol/whoqol-bref) 6. EQ-5D (EuroQol; see https://euroqol.org/information-and-support/) 7. PHQ-8 (Kroenke et al., 2009, J Affect Disord, 114(1-3), 163-73) 8. GAD-7 (Spitzer et al., 2006, Arch Intern Med, 166(10), 1092-7) 5. METHODS ----------- Participants were invited to complete an online study looking at eating attitudes and quality of life, recruited from a moderately large UK university through local advertising (posters on campus) and the Psychology Research Participation Scheme. Data collection took place online and the study was approved by the University’s Ethics Committee. Ages of the sample ranged from 18–46 (mean = 20.48y), with a mean body mass index of 22.60kg/m2. Participants were asked to provide demographic information, in addition to responses to several questionnaires (listed above). A range of scores on the measures were seen, and the primary research question involved submitting the WBIS-M to factor analysis.
