LSWT ARC-Lake v3 1. PROJECT ------------ Title: ATSR Reprocessing for Climate: Lake Surface Water Temperature & Ice Cover (ARC-Lake) Dates: 1st June 2009 - 1st January 2014 Funding organisation: European Space Agency, University of Reading/University of Edinburgh 2. DATASET ------------ Title: Lake Surface Water Temperature ARC-Lake v3 (1995-2012) Description: The dataset consists of satellite observations of Lake Surface Water Temperature (LSWT) and Lake Ice Cover (LIC), for major lakes, globally, from 1995 to 2012. The dataset was generated within the European Space Agency (ESA) 'ATSR Reprocessing for Climate: Lake Surface Water Temperature & Ice Coverage' (ARC-Lake) project. The project aimed to use the exceptional radiometric qualities and dual-view scanning capability of the ATSRs to derive observations of LSWT. This can be considered to be a major contribution to monitoring of lakes within the Global Climate Observing System, because the ATSRs are in principle capable to be a highly accurate source of information on LSWTs on a systematic global basis as opposite of the availability of in situ measurements. LSWT and LIC observations have potential environmental and meteorological applications for inland water management and numerical weather prediction (NWP). They also offer the basis of a long term record of the physical state of lakes. Extensive details of the data products available and their contents are provided in the documentation and on the website http://www.laketemp.net/home/. A summary of the possible variants is given below. Note that not all possible combinations are available. Summary of possible ARC-Lake data files ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Coverage: | Per-lake / Global Source: | Observations / Reconstructions Time: | Day / Night Spatial Resolution: | 0.05 degree grid / Lake-mean Temporal Averaging: | None / Climatology / Timeseries Temporal Averaging Period: | Seasonal / Monthly / Twice-monthly / Daily ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ARC-Lake v3 data products may be downloaded and used freely, but we ask that the dataset is referenced if used in any publications. CONTENTS ------------ ARC-Lake v3 data products contain observations of Lake Surface Water Temperature (LSWT) and Lake Ice Cover (LIC) from the series of (Advanced) Along-Track Scanning Radiometers ((A)ATSRs) and cover the period from 1st June 1995 to 8th April 2012. The dataset is split into four components: (1) PER-LAKE (2) GLOBAL, (3) ANCILLARY, and (4) DOCUMENTATION. The files contained in the dataset are listed below: (1) PER-LAKE: They are zipped netCDF files. The filenames start with ALID. They contain data products on a lake-by-lake basis. A number of different data products are available for each lake and are grouped together into a zip archive for each lake. There are 1628 lakes in the dataset and they are listed in ARC-Lake_LDB_v3.csv file in ANCILLARY component of the dataset. The filename conventions for the files inside of the archive are described in the document ARCLake_DPD_v3.pdf. Lakes are further grouped in the following archive files: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ALID0001.zip | Per-Lake zip file for Caspian lake ALID0002-0006.zip | Per-Lake zip files for lakes from 2 to 6 in lake list (5 lakes) ALID0007-0020.zip | Per-Lake zip files for lakes from 7 to 20 in the lake list (14 lakes) ALID0021-0100.zip | Per-Lake zip files for lakes from 21 to 100 in the lake list (75 lakes) ALID0102-0400.zip | Per-Lake zip files for lakes from 102 to 400 in the lake list (249 lakes) ALID0403-1398.zip | Per-Lake zip files for lakes from 403 to 1398 in the lake list (612 lakes) ALID1403-3614.zip | Per-Lake zip files for lakes from 1403 to 3614 in the lake list (672 lakes) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2) GLOBAL: They are zipped netCDF files. The filename start with GLOBAL. They contain data products with global coverage (i.e. all lakes, where available, are included in the same product). As for the per-lake data, global data products are available with a range of different spatial and temporal averaging, for both observations and reconstructions. Note that equivalent global data products are not available for every possible type of per-lake data product. They are grouped together into three zip archives, by product type. The filenames conventions for the files inside of the archive are described in the document ARCLake_DPD_v3.pdf. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLOBAL_AVERAGED.zip Global files containing OBSERVATIONS and RECONSTRUCTIONS spatially and/or temporally averaged. It contains 2 files: ALID9999_CGOBS9B.zip for the OBSERVATIONS and ALID9999_CGREC9B.zip for the RECONSTRUCTIONS. GLOBAL_OBS_UNAVERAGED_DAY.zip Global files containing OBSERVATIONS for day-time. It contains 2 files: ALID9999_DGOBS2D.zip for day-time OBSERVATIONS with ATRS2 on ESR-2 and ALID9999_DGOBS3D.zip for day-time OBSERVATIONS with AATSR on Envisat. GLOBAL_OBS_UNAVERAGED_NIGHT.zip Global files containing OBSERVATIONS for night-time. It contains 2 files: ALID9999_DGOBS2N.zip for night-time OBSERVATIONS with ATRS2 on ESR-2 and ALID9999_DGOBS3N.zip for night-time OBSERVATIONS with AATSR on Envisat. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3) ANCILLARY: The two files start with LW and one is a zipped netCDF file and the other is csv file. LW_MASK_v3.zip It contains netCDF files for the land/water mask which illustrates where the water bodies are located and it should be used together with the LSWT product. LW_LDB_v3.csv It contains the list of lakes together with the lat/lon of the centre, name, country and continent information. (4) DOCUMENTS (pdf files) DOCS.zip It contains 2 files: - ARC-Lake-ATBD-v1.4.pdf, the ATBD (Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document) - ARCLake_DPD_v3.pdf, the Data Product Description Document.
